House of God Forever

By Jon Foreman, additional lyrics in blue by Andy Viar

[Verse 1]

God is my Shepherd
I won’t be wanting, I won’t be wanting
He makes me rest
In fields of green, with quiet streams
Even though I walk
Through the valley, of death and dying
You’ll lead me through the fear (was: I will not fear)
Cause You are with me, You’re always with me (was: You are with me)

[Verse 2]

Why these edits?

Although in Psalm 23:4 David said that “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil/danger”, I know that I do experience fear so it is difficult for me to sing “I will not fear” with sincerity. But I know that when I do fear, that He (the Lord) will lead me through it. See Psalm 34:4, “I sought the Lord, and he answered me and rescued me from all my fears.”

In the second verse Jon Foreman ends the verse with “You’re always with me”. I’m adding this to the first verse as well because it adds an extra layer of depth of expressing trust in Him, trust that there is never a time that He is not with me. Since my attention can slip off of Him and onto the worries of the day sometimes I feel like He is not with me even though He is. Singing “You’re always with me” speaks the truth, trust, faith, that carries me through those moments. See Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
